Vancouver Island, where I am visiting my daughter is big so it is fun to get on a local ferry and go off to visit some of the smaller outer islands. To get to Hornby, our destination yesterday, we had to make a skip over Denman. the ferries are almost like local busses, the first shorter one is operated with a tow wire rather than a motor. Hornby has a beautiful trail through woods and out on the exposed cliff and bluff.

I was very happy that Elizabeth, my daughter who is hosting me, was comfortable all during the 5 km walk. She has had surgery on her ankle and heel and only yesterday she revealed that our last visit to this trail was very painful for her. Of course, like a caring mum…,”But why didn’t you say…..”’ her reply “Don’t spread the dread,” which she tells me is an MSF saying. I am not such a stoic , but I like the saying. I’ll remember it, I hope.

In the afternoon we went to the beautiful beach and discovered that a beach umbrella can be securely anchored with shoe laces. My beloved Colombia trail runners gave up their ties and we enjoyed a shady rest.

More for Elizabeth to covet! We stopped off at a favorite winery on Denman Island, between ferries.

I had been hoping to see the border collies who are a feature here but one had been given away as she proved to be afraid of sheep and Shadow, who remained got a shy spell and ran off to hide.

A beautiful day. It is so wonderful to have the freedom and companionship to enjoy these wonders.
