Writing under a Montreal sky

Yesterday on the channel

Flat calm and a couple of fishermen out casting. I settled down in a shady little niche under a high dried out root of driftwood. It’s amazing how much cooler it is just in a little pool of shade.

Fish were jumping. Big silvery fish jumped out of the flat sea between the man in the white boat and the boy in the dingy. His Dad was standing in waders casting and casting his line.

I was sure they would catch something as they cast their lines again and again. A large grey heron flew by, low to the water. A large flock of geese traced a line much further out from shore. A woman in an orange bathing suit glided by on a paddle board.

The fishermen cast and cast again and again. Fish jumped out of the water as if to mock us all. Perhaps they are getting ready to swim upstream to their spawning grounds, up the Oyster River far from the shore. It is almost time, after all.

The fishermen gave up and pulled their crafts up onto the shore. Home with not one fish to show for it! Time for me to creep out of my shady hideaway and walk back to the house.

Waiting for the salmon run

Loved your photos—the best being the ‘personal’ one looking past your shoes—good perspective!
