Writing under a Montreal sky

Outside the environment minister’s office

Today I took part in a Canada-wide protest against Canada’s abysmal record on fossil fuels. A group of about 60 people met outside the office of Stefan Gilbeault in downtown Montreal. This was part of a Canada-wide protest organized by Canada 350, a national action group. Now that we are the proud exporters of smoke and ash from the many forest fires burning in our country, it is time to take action and pressure our political representatives.

The leaders of the demo

Speeches were read, signed were paraded and, most important, the leaders of the demo went upstairs to meet with M. Guilbault and present a letter signed by the protesters and others. The letter asks that the huge subsidies and tax cuts that the oil and gas industries receive be eliminated. This money could be used to develop jobs in the green energy businesses we need.

On my way to the protest

I saw this beautiful creature in a local park. How long will it continue to live here? I am not very used to these demonstrations but I have a feeling I’m going to get used to them. I have a feeling some elected officials are going to get awfully tired of me.

Bravo Isobel, I wonder if now that 1/3 of the American population is experiencing the pall of Canadian smoke there will be more of a willingness for their government to move against fossil fuels. After all, even Republicans breathe the air! However, today will be a peak air travel day —and planes use fossil fuels.

I love that picture of the egret—you are a fab photographer and that shows the grace of that beautiful bird, and its green watery surroundings.

This phone is the “ good photographer” . To speak to your comment of yesterday, because I get on a plane once or twice a year I am holding out on getting a car. It’s easier when you live close to the metro of course! Also, I think I’m going to seriously adopt this cause!
