Writing under a Montreal sky

Wonderful

Again, on my way to the library this time. He had his eye on me. The Canada geese are all over the place but he waded solemnly at water’s edge. The sky was clearer than it has been. It was the wind that saved us yesterday.

I went to return a book of Hemingway short stories. I developed a dislike of his work when I was quite young. Thought I’d give him another shot. He is a Nobel prize winner, after all. Nope, still not a fan.

I asked at the library desk for Milton’s Paradise Lost. I’ve never read it and I thought I’d better hurry up and fill in the gaping holes in my education. The young lady at the circulation desk tapped on her computer keyboard. I didn’t expect that she would find a copy in our little inner city library, dedicated to Marie Uguay a local poet who died very young. The English language collection is pitiful. To my surprise the librarian raised her eyes. “ Yes, we have a copy” I gasped. “ It’s a comic book version though?” We locked gazes and without a word she started typing again. “ I’ll order a copy from another branch,”

I thought I heard a faint rumbling as over the burning forests, over leagues of ocean, over town and English countryside, Milton shifted uneasily in damp earth.

I think reading the comic book version would have been fun! But perhaps try the real deal first!
