Writing under a Montreal sky

Moose and gothic windows!

Canadian, eh? This was actually my second choice of museums to visit but as I am making it a rule to walk at least one way, this one got the thumbs up today. What used to be called the Museum of Civilization but now has a new name is over a bridge in Hull, Quebec. It looked pretty hard to negotiate the various highways leading there so I chose this one. Oh, the new name is History Museum and I suppose that is due to some sort of “political correctness”??? I’m usually big on political correctness but this….

One perspective on a Blue Whale

Google Maps led me a merry dance over and under highways and train tracks and through the University where of course no names are posted on various lanes alleged to be “ the way”. However I managed to get to my destination after a lot of wandering and, boy, what a wonderful place!

A bit off-putting

But one I got inside I was charmed! It reminded me a bit of the Natural History in New York .

Lots of vistas behind plate glass

A bear looking for lunch

Dinosaurs too to the delight of the kids

I had forgotten that it was Sunday afternoon, something that was soon brought to my attention. There are advantages to being deaf sometimes. I popped out my aids and smiled sweetly at any and all of the many Ottawa tots screeching their approval or distain and carried on with my tour.

Oh Canada, eh?

My favorite floor was the birds, I think.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for a golden-headed blackbird!

A whole floor was devoted to the Arctic and another to “ re-wilding” and art in the face of climate change.

The lantern

When I finally got up there I could see the beauty of it. This museum certainly knows its customers. There were many places with tables and chairs where families were eating a packed lunch. The coat check, to my surprise was just a big self-serve room with racks and hangers for us to get rid of outer wear. There were lots of interactive features for the kids to investigate such as parts of exhibits set down at kid-level sight slots

Lots of Edwardian era detail
To welcome visitors or to wish them farewell

As I stepped out I realized it was raining and so I took an Uber home.

Another gem of a place in Ottawa I never knew existed.

I feel like I am traveling down memory lane! I used to take my young students to this museum on field trips from Montreal! I always loved the animals scenes framed in nature! So much to look at! What a treat for you to be able to do this while working!

Well, I wouldn’t call it working! This darling little cat is now snuggled up on my lap. One of my “tasks” I guess. The museum really was interesting! A great floor on the Arctic … and the birds!

The Museum of Natural History (as it was called when I lived there!) is pretty cool as well. Sent from my iPhone
