Writing under a Montreal sky

On my way through the cool park this Sunday morning

Buddhist prayer flags

There were some bright flags stretched between trees printed with images and text in a language I don’t know. Among them was a sign announcing the Quebec Buddhist Society. I immediately remembered the idea of prayer flags.

I think the idea is that with every breeze the flag flutters and a prayer is raised. How wonderful if we thought of every breeze swaying a leaf or a bough of a tree, every breeze rippling a wave on water, lifting the wing of a bird, blowing a lock of hair out of place, as a prayer. Even each breath we take creates a breeze and so….

Your words are very evocative. I’m recalling the flags at a Buddhist temple overlooking Katmandu, visited in 1987, placed among wheels along a parapet. As the worshippers passed by, each would give a wheel a turn to keep the prayers moving.
